Kylie Sandford was born in Toronto where her training started at a young age with classes at the Art Gallery of Ontario, surrounded by paintings of the Group of Seven. She moved to Montreal to complete a BFA at Concordia University, which included intensive studies for painting at the École des Beaux Arts de Nîmes, France. She later studied traditional oil painting techniques for trompe l’oeil at the École d’art Frank Imperato, Mtl., learning the skills taught at the Van der Kelen school in Belgium. After participating in a large-scale mural project presented at the Salon habitat d’automne Mtl. in 2000 with Frank Imperato, she began applying a traditional oil glazing technique to her paintings.

With this technique, which requires The poolpatience and time, Kylie seeks the depth and resonance of light as seen in nature to apply to her landscape and water paintings. Layers are worked up by respecting drying times and the thin transparencies of oil colour are applied again and again to acheive deep and subtle colour combinations. “The artist must make a maze seem a highway” as is said by the writer and art critic John Berger, one of Kylie’s objectives in creating these paintings. Exploring the countryside while traveling, she collects landscapes and re-creates them on canvas expressing the light captured, their ephemerality and simply their beauty.

Kylie Sandford has shown her work repetitively in juried shows such as the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, and the Festiv’art de Frelighsburg,Qc, (1st prize in 2012), the Festival International de Montréal en Arts, Rêves d’automne, Baie St paul, Qc. (First Prize 2016, Honorable Mention 2014) and the Society of Canadian Artists (Honorable Mention 2016) as well as Les Journées de la culture in Montreal and Cowansville.

She is a member of the RAAV, Arts Sutton, Culture Montérégie, La Maison de la Culture de Brompton and the CMAQ. Kylie is currently living in the Brome-Missisquoi region of the Eastern Townships.

Her work resides in many private homes across Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia.
